Youth and Community Programs Manager

Organization Description

The New Jersey Academy for Aquatic Sciences is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the understanding, appreciation and protection of aquatic life and habitats through research, education and youth development programs.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Community Initiatives (CI), the Youth and Community Programs Manager (YCM) provides direct educational and mentoring services to the Academy's youth audience participating in the Community and Urban Science Enrichment (CAUSE) Program by designing and developing materials and implementing programs which enhance the youths' learning experiences and promote their developmental success.  In addition, the YCM recruits and oversees all middle school programming aspects. The YCM will collaborate with all Academy program managers to ensure the achievement of the organizational goals and vision.


Responsibilities

Routine Responsibilities

·   Develop and implement recruitment and retention plans for attracting youth participants to the CAUSE, Apprentice, and SEA Programs.


·   Participate with the CI team in interviewing, hiring, and tracking of students for participation in all youth and community programs.

·  

Assists with the design, implementation and supervision of work‑based, after school, and summer educational programs for youth for all components of the CAUSE Program, including training. 

·   Co-Conduct formal evaluations and goal setting discussions with youth participants.

·   Coordinate youth programs with various Academy departments to integrate them into the fabric of the institution.

·   Research and write educational materials to be used for trainings, workshops, or presentations.

·   Represents the Academy at conferences/meetings.

·   Assist/substitute for other education department programs as needed.

·   Other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Initiatives.

Strategic Planning

·   Participate in ongoing strategic and logic model planning for the Community Initiatives Division.

·   Assess and implement any changes necessary to youth program processes or activities.

·   Participate in ongoing strategic planning process with the Academy management towards overall organizational goals.

Financial Responsibilities

·   Participate in the annual program budget process. Manage program expenditures.

·   Assist the Development and CI Divisions with the procurement of grant funding.

Position Requirements

·   A minimum of a Bachelor degree in science or education.  An advanced degree, coursework or experience with adolescents in an informal education setting preferred.

·   Minimum 2 years direct experience in an informal education setting developing fun, educational programs for youth and family audiences.

·   Experience developing budgets, managing private and government grants.

·   Ability to work with all departments and a diverse team of adults and youth.

·   Ability to manage projects, partnerships, and professional relationships.

·   Hands-on manager with impeccable integrity. Strong sense of ownership in department function.

·   Experience developing and managing youth and program staff and developing service-minded culture.

·   Ability to plan, organize and think strategically.

·   Highly organized, creative and flexible in dynamic environment.

·   Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Grant writing a plus.

·   Commitment to the Academy’s Organizational mission and values.

·   Computer experience including use of word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.

·   Driver's license and good driving record required.

·   Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some evenings.

·   Spanish speaking ability or other language proficiency preferred.

Physical Requirements

·   Pre-employment drug testing and criminal background check required.

·   No history of allergy to plants or animals which may interfere with the candidate's ability to work.
